SUBMISSIONS

Phantasmag is committed to celebrating diverse and new voices, and we welcome article pitches (both in print and online) and original artwork. While we would love to respond to every pitch, due to a high volume of submissions, we can only reply to those we wish to move forward with. After reading our submission guide, you can pitch to our editorial team at phantasmagteam@gmail.com

What we are looking for

  • Journalistic articles on the horror genre, preferably queer and feminist horror. Topics can range from horror film to television, fashion, history, art, literature, music, activism, video games, and more.

  • Interview-based profiles, listicles, Q&As, opinion pieces, deep-dives, reviews.

  • Articles that focus on artisan work in horror film and TV. We love pieces that spotlight production design, special effects, costume design, make-up, and more.

  • Articles that unearth hidden horror histories (see the Dario Argento fashion show and The Miss American Vampire beauty contest in Issue 001 and 002).

  • Zooming In articles (a feature where each issue we spotlight one element—from lighting to cinematography—that helps make a horror film a classic).

  • Horror is inherently political, so we would not shy away from articles that consider horror in relation to pressing political realities.

  • Any original artwork relating to the horror genre, including photography, illustrations, paintings, and collages.

Guidelines

  • We only accept original, unpublished work. All submitted work must be your own.

  • Submit 1-3 pitches at a time. This should include a brief description (300 words max) of the proposed article or artwork.

  • Include 2-3 examples of relevant previous work.

  • If you have a finished piece that you believe suits our magazine, you are welcome to submit it.

  • Short-form articles (reviews, listicles) should be 1000 words max.

  • Long-form articles (profiles, deep-dives) should be 2000 words max.

  • For original artwork, all pieces must be size B5 with bleed (253 x 179mm).

How to pitch an article

  • Directly tell us the core of your story and why it matters. This can be just as valuable for a playful listicle as for a serious opinion piece.

  • Explain why you are pitching to Phantasmag rather than another publication. How does it fit with our content and tone?

  • Explain why you are the right person to write the piece.

  • Have a narrow focus. For example, rather than write up a general history of the queerness of vampires, we would prefer a focused reflection on a film, series, or book relevant to this theme.

  • Try to match the tone of your pitch with that of your planned article.

For in-print writing, contributors will be paid £50 (short-form articles) and £80 (long-form articles). Payment for original artwork, as well as online articles, will be discussed with successful applicants.
